Mrs Cole Porter Recollects

Coming soon in the Ekphrastic Reivew, this piece of short fiction was written in response to Cole Porter's portrait in the Smithsonian portrait collection. In it, Porter's wife, Linda Lee Thompson, reflects on their life together.

There are two empty brandy glasses on your nightstand. They’re as smudged with fingers and lips as the man I find tangled in your bedsheets. You’ve never asked me how it feels to be in love with you, and now is not the moment to extemporize. But if I could bottle this tableau, it would taste like drinking vinegar from a champagne flute and pretending I don’t care.
